Thank you to everyone who took part in our recent data update. Because of your input, we have successfully updated our inventory of co-ops, credit unions, caisses populaires, and mutuals in Canada. With this data, we’ve learned that there are approximately 7,500 co-operatives presumed to be in business in Canada, 91% of which are non-financial, 8% are financial and 1% are mutuals. By counting our members and their member organizations, CMC is proud to represent 40% of all co-operatives in Canada.

Our database powers the searchable, interactive Co-operation across Canada directory and map featuring the organization’s name, address, website, co-op sector and type, and date of incorporation (where data is available). This directory is used by the public to locate co-ops in their regions, by co-operatives looking to partner with other co-ops, and by researchers, academics, and government departments to learn about the various aspects of Canadian co-operatives.

Additionally, new DEI and procurement search functions are now available. The DEI tagging allows users to search for co-ops, credit unions, caisses populaires and mutuals that are comprised of members from, or primarily serve under-represented communities (i.e. Indigenous, ethnocultural groups, women, youth, LGBTQ2S.) These options can be selected by clicking on the “Advanced filters” box.

The procurement coding allows users to search for various products and services offered by Canadian co-ops (i.e. retail, food, accommodation, etc.) These search filters can be viewed and selected by clicking on the “Products and Services” box. A drop-down list of categories and sub-categories will appear by clicking into these fields. This can be useful when your organization is sourcing products/services, and you wish to support co-operation among co-operatives.

To help us validate and refine these functionalities, please review your organization’s details. To ensure our coding is accurate and inclusive, please also share this with your member organizations and encourage them to review their listings. Don’t hesitate to let us know if you’d like us to make any changes via the Feedback Form.

On behalf of the co-op sector, CMC maintains the only comprehensive database of co-operatives, credit unions, caisses populaires and mutuals in Canada. This is a valuable resource to CMC, our members, and the Canadian co-operative movement. With your help, we will continuously expand our data through outreach, feedback, research, and referrals.

Yours in co-operation,

Marie-Pier Duquette – Manager, Member Engagement
