CMC President attends the 15th Sommet de la Francophonie

CMC President Léo Leblanc was invited to accompany the Prime Minister and represent Co-operatives and Mutuals Canada at the 15th Sommet de la Francophonie. The Summit took place in Dakar, Senegal on November 29 and 30. 9 resolutions were adopted by the countries attending as the “declaration of Dakar” as well as adopting economic and youth strategies, and the next Summit was entrusted to Madagascar for 2016.

Michaëlle Jean, former Governor General of Canada, was elected Secretary General of the Francophonie by the gathered Heads of State. Ms. Jean is the first Canadian and the first woman to be elected to this prestigious position.

The International Organisation of La Francophonie was created in 1970. Its mission is to embody the active solidarity between its 57 member states, which together represent over one-third of the United Nations’ member states and account for a population of over 890 million people, including 220 million French speakers.
