International Co-operative Alliance e-Digest

Dear fellow co-operators,

Our collective knowledge of the figures of the co-operative sector takes another step forward with Turkey’s launch of a co-operative statistics project. The first country to adopt a resolution on gathering co-operative insights from the International Conference of Labour Statisticians, Turkey is to host, coming November, the Alliance’s Global Conference and General Assembly. Under the theme “Towards 2020” the conference will look at future trends, challenges and strategies for co-operatives. We have received a fair number of registrations already:

The importance of co-operative data was again emphasized, when co-operators, politicians and NGO representatives met at the European Parliament in Brussels this month, for a debate organised by Cooperatives Europe and Euro Coop’s on private sector actors in development. Read more on the online development database which was launched there in this e-digest. Figures help us to show to governments our impact on the economy, and this is also what we want to achieve through the World Co-operative Monitor. Visit and add your data, before April 30!

And when figures meet with dynamism, governments indeed notice the co-operative difference. That was again proven in Africa last month, with the passing of the new East African Community Co-operative Societies Act. A co-operative agency was created that will increase awareness and drive co-operative growth. Find out more in this e-digest.

Last but not least, I am most pleased to announce the publication of the long-awaited Survey of Co-operative Capital. This key 2015 report examines debt and equity instruments that co-operatives use, and explores ways to access additional capital while still adhering to co-operative principles. Happy reading!

Charles Gould,

Director-General, International Co-operative Alliance
