Each year, CMC honours individuals and organizations working in the Canadian co-operative and mutual sector to recognize their outstanding contribution to the sector. For 2023, CMC was excited to announce the creation of two brand new Awards to reflect the ongoing shifts within the sector, highlighting its commitment to JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) and environmental priorities. All winners were announced during the gala dinner at the annual CMC Congress, held in Ottawa at the Delta City Centre Hotel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt has truly been an incredible year for our sector and these winners are some of the amazing individuals leading the way,\u201d declares John Kay, president of the CMC Board of Directors. \u201cAs we move towards a more inclusive, just, equitable, diverse, and sustainable sector, it is important to highlight the work that has already been done while recognizing that this is just the beginning. Let us celebrate the hard work, dedication and acknowledge the ongoing success of the Canadian co-operatives and mutuals from coast to coast.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The winners are carefully chosen by members of the CMC Awards Committee. The committee reviews all applications which were submitted by CMC\u2019s member co-operatives and mutuals. The committee is comprised of Chair Jim Bettcher as well as Pascal Billard, Danika Dinko, Iva Jankovic, Mary Nirlungayuk, Reba Plummer, and John Kay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are the 2023 winners:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Co-operator of the Year Award : St\u00e9phane Trottier <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The CMC Co-operator of the Year Award honours individuals who have contributed outstanding efforts to the cause and the development of co\u2010operative and\/or mutual enterprises. This award provides recognition to an individual who has contributed in especially significant ways to promoting, developing, or uniting co\u2011operatives and\/or mutuals in Canada and\/or internationally.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"St\u00e9phane Trottier - 2023 Co-operator of the Year Award \/ Prix du coop\u00e9rateur de l\u2019ann\u00e9e de 2023\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NckJHeXuexg?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>St\u00e9phane Trottier is an accomplished leader in the co-operative sector and a true ambassador of intercooperation. He was the first Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Caisse Desjardins Ontario and the architect of the Desjardins movement\u2019s largest merger project, which aimed to bring together the 11 Ontario caisses populaires and its federation in 2020. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He set up liaison committees made up of members and former directors of the 11 caisses to ensure that the voice of members and customers was heard. He was the first President of Caisse Desjardins Ontario and has held a number of other key positions, including Vice-President of the Desjardins Group Retirement Plan, Director of Desjardins Group, Desjardins Group representative to Co-operatives and Mutuals Canada, member of the Risk Management Commission and President of Caisse populaire Trillium. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>St\u00e9phane Trottier has been a director for over 25 years. His passion for community service and representing members\u2019 interests has been recognized on several occasions. In 2021, he received the Business Leader of the Year Award from the Capital Region Business Association, and in 2022, he received the Long-Term Service Award from the Director\u2019s Forum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>St\u00e9phane Trottier is a proud, accomplished, committed and passionate individual whose leadership and contributions are a testament to the power of co-operatives and mutuals. His commitment, innovation and dedication have contributed to the success of Caisse Desjardins Ontario.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>YOUNG CO-OPERATOR OF THE YEAR AWARD: KRISTEN MURRAY<\/strong><br\/><br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The CMC Young Co-operator of the Year Award honours individuals of 35 years of age or less who have contributed outstanding efforts to the cause and the development of co\u2010operative and\/or mutual enterprises. This award provides recognition to an individual who has contributed in especially significant ways to promoting, developing, or uniting co\u2010operatives and\/or mutuals in Canada and\/or internationally.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Kristen Murray - Prix de la coop\u00e9ratrice de l\u2019ann\u00e9e 2023 - Young Co-operator of the Year Award 2023\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LXOR_P-lPVY?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Kristen Murray (she\/her) is a community leader and social entrepreneur from St. John\u2019s, Newfoundland &amp; Labrador (NL). She holds the degrees of Bachelor of Commerce and Master of Business Administration in Social Enterprise &amp; Entrepreneurship (MBA-SEE) from Memorial University of Newfoundland. Kristen is currently the Project Specialist at the NL Federation of Co-operatives (NLFC), leading the development of a new co-operative incubator program and is also enrolled in CoopZone\u2019s Co-operative Developer Training Program. She was the 2022 recipient of the Lemaire Co-operative Studies Award from the Canadian Association for Studies in Co-operation and a 2023 Co-operators Young Leaders Award recipient. Kristen was recently appointed to Canada\u2019s Emerging Co-operators advisory committee and also sits on both the Inspiring Communities Atlantic Changemakers Council and the NL Social Innovation Coalition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SMALL CO-OPERATIVE OF THE YEAR AWARD: RADISH CO-OPERATIVE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Small Co-operative of the Year Award honours Canadian co\u2010operative and\/or mutual organizations that have made significant contributions to co\u2010operatives and\/or mutuals in Canada and\/or internationally.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Coop\u00e9rative Radish - Prix CMC Petite coop\u00e9rative de 2023 - CMC Award Small Co-operative of 2023\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mv2M0pcj9XM?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Radish is a restaurant food delivery and technology co-operative that is owned and operated by its restaurant, employee, and consumer members. Founded in 2020 in Montreal, it boasts over 140 merchants on its platform, and employs over 20 people. Its mission is to mutualize the technical needs of the restaurant industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>LARGE CO-OPERATIVE OF THE YEAR AWARD: CO-OPERATIVE HOUSING FEDERATION OF CANADA<\/strong><br\/><br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Large Co-operative of the Year Award honours Canadian co\u2010operative and\/or mutual organizations that have made significant contributions to co\u2010operatives and\/or mutuals in Canada and\/or internationally.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"CHF Canada - Prix CMC grande coop\u00e9rative de 2023 - CMC Award Large Co-operative of 2023\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JN9TtWfK3Is?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The mission of the Co-operative Housing Federation of Canada (CHF Canada) is to inspire, represent and serve our members in a united co-operative housing movement. CHF Canada is the national voice of co-operative housing, representing 2,200 housing co-operatives, home to a quarter of a million people in every province and territory. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Co-operative housing is a well-documented success story. For over 50 years, co-ops have provided good-quality, affordable housing owned and managed by the community members who live there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVE OF THE YEAR AWARD: SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS GROUP<\/strong><br\/><br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The CMC Environmental Initiative of the Year Award honours Canadian co-operative and\/or mutual organizations that have made a significant contribution, through a project or the implementation of new practices, to reducing their environmental footprint.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"SSG - Environmental Initiative of the Year Award - Prix de l\u2019initiative environnementale de l\u2019ann\u00e9e\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/b0UUKjQSBWI?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>SSG is an award-winning climate action planning firm. They create state-of-art climate mitigation and adaptation plans for municipalities, governments, organizations, and campuses to create decarbonized, healthy, equitable communities.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As SSG, they began their work in 2001 in Canada, where they\u2019ve modelled low-carbon futures for more than 40% of the population. SSG now works in the US, Latin America, and beyond.
