{"id":248894,"date":"2025-11-25T10:19:43","date_gmt":"2025-11-25T15:19:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada.coop\/?p=248894"},"modified":"2025-11-25T12:52:44","modified_gmt":"2025-11-25T17:52:44","slug":"dans-adventures-october-and-november-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada.coop\/en\/dans-adventures-october-and-november-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Dan&#8217;s Adventures, October and November 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In late October, the first of two back-to-back international events provided a unique opportunity to contribute to the worldwide dialogue on co-operatives and highlight the Canadian movement on the world stage.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1663\" height=\"1247\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/Camera-Photo-by-Jacob-Matthew-Drum.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-248948 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>The first, the Global Co-op Innovation Summit (GICS) 2025 took place in Torres Vedras, Portugal, on October 27 and 28. Building on the success of the Montreal 2023, Paris 2022 and the virtual events in 2021 and 2020, the Summit was coordinated by the Canada-based\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/icin.coop\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">International Cooperative Innovation Network<\/a><strong> <\/strong>(RICI) and CMC was pleased to participate on its Advisory Committee and as a moderator on multiple reporting panels.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>The program was built around how co-operatives can leverage their democratic foundation and commitment to people-centered values to respond to modern challenges. The streams, through workshops and expert-panels, focused on providing the knowledge and tools to empower people to act, build and maintain trust and bring forward systemic change. Dan was pleased to see many Canadians as attendees and on stage, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalinnovation.coop\/membre\/wilson-alexandra\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alexandra Wilson<\/a>, Chair of the ICA\u2019s Co-op Identity Group and Robby Tulus, Ottawa-based co-founder of the Indonesian credit union movement.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"940\" height=\"788\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/16-4.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-249010 size-full\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Representatives from the <a href=\"https:\/\/cqcm.coop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Conseil Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois de la coop\u00e9ration et de la mutualit\u00e9<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/impact-on.com\/about-us\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Impact ON<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/baseline.quebec\/en\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Baseline<\/a>,&nbsp; the <a href=\"https:\/\/cdfcanada.coop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Co-operative Development Foundation<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/socodevi.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SOCODEVI<\/a>, the, <a href=\"https:\/\/ssg.coop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sustainability Solutions Group<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smu.ca\/iccm\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">International Centre for Co\u2011operative Management at Saint Mary\u2019s University<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/chaire-ccgb.uqam.ca\/en\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Desjardins-Guy-Bernier Chair of Cooperation at the Universit\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al<\/a> (UQAM) were present and the <a href=\"https:\/\/leconsortium.coop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Consortium for Collective Enterprise Cooperation<\/a> provided both speakers and back-offices services for the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"940\" height=\"788\" data-id=\"249002\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/14-3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-249002\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" data-id=\"248950\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/J.-Benoit-Caron-Consortium.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-248950\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>23 hours after stepping off stage at the GICS 2025 in Portugal, Dan could be found 1153 kilometers to the North-East, presenting in Bordeaux, France at the <a href=\"https:\/\/bordeauxgsef2025.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global Social and Solidarity Economy Forum<\/a> (GSEF 2025).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2208\" height=\"2944\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/Banner.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-248956 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Taking place from October 29-31, this biennial gathering brings together thousands of representatives from over a hundred countries, to explore and share best practices to promote SSE as a means to achieve inclusive and sustainable local development.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Moderated by B\u00e9atrice Alain from the Chantier de l&#8217;\u00e9conomie sociale, the roundtable in which Dan participated was titled \u201cA North American dialogue on SSE development and local practices as a breeding ground for democratic Renewal\u201d. Dan contributed alongside fellow Canadian Celina Caesar-Chavannes from the <a href=\"https:\/\/ccednet-rcdec.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canadian Community Economic Development Network (CCEDNet)<\/a> and Southerly neighbours David Cobb from the <a href=\"https:\/\/ussen.org\/about-ussen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">US Solidarity Economy Network<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/ripess\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Intercontinental Network for the Promotion of Social Solidarity Economy<\/a> (RIPESS), as well as Joe Guinan from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.democracycollaborative.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Democracy Collaborative<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"940\" height=\"788\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/17-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-249012 size-full\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2736\" height=\"3648\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/France-Outre-mer.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-248972 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>The impressive event had 13 plenary sessions and 169 roundtables organized in seven pathways, each of which explored different aspects of the social and solidarity economy, informed by the realities from 5 continents. The massive exhibition hall and the hallways leading to it were buzzing with ideas, nascent collaborations and big-picture statements!<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly, it should also be mentioned that Dan was greatly impressed by the deep ties and ongoing collaboration between the Quebec and French stakeholders in particular, with many references to study tours, mutually inspired SSE pieces of legislation and expertise-sharing initiatives. This explains the very strong presence of representatives from Quebec at the GSEF, with participation from speakers from <em>La Belle Province <\/em>in over a quarter of the sessions!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"3648\" height=\"2736\" data-id=\"248954\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/Quebec-reception-with-members-and-academics.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-248954\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"3648\" height=\"2736\" data-id=\"248978\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/ICA-Europe.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-248978\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In November, after being back from his international travels, Dan headed towards the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). On the way, as he is wont to do, he stopped in at the Pews Co-operative Inc in Merrickville and the Shepherd\u2019s Green Co-op Homes Inc. in Brockville.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thepews.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Pews<\/a> is a 2024 newly-established consumer co-operative, that serves as a community hub and event space. The co-operative converted an iconic church building in the historic village of Merrickville-Wolford, officially dubbed <em>Canada\u2019s Most Beautiful Village<\/em> by Communities in Bloom, located an hour South of Ottawa. The multi-purpose facility has diverse offerings, from Kung Fu Lite, Music recordings and songwriters\u2019 Circle offerings, as well as special event, community kitchen and office spaces. The Pews defines itself as a place where community and creativity come together and would be a great place to stop in for the upcoming Christmas market.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2640\" height=\"1980\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/The-Pews-Merrickville.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-248986 size-full\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2640\" height=\"1980\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/Shepherd-s-Green-Brockville.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-248984 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Established in 1991, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leedsgrenville.com\/en\/services\/resources\/Housing\/Housing-Brochures---Brockville---ShepGreenCoopHINPP.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shepherd\u2019s Green<\/a> is a 30-unit mixed housing co-operative that includes both (lower than the actual) market housing (16) and rent-geared-to-income (14) townhouses and apartments, the latter of which are filled in collaboration with the Social Housing Registry. It also includes two units specifically designed for persons with a disability. It should be noted that Shepherds Green leadership is very proud to be on the verge of paying off their mortgage in 2027!&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Dan\u2019s time North of Toronto served two distinct purposes, prepare for Congress 2026 and participate in the opening of the new headquarters of Gay Lea Foods Co-operative.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>On the evening of November 5, Dan broke bread with York University Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.laps.yorku.ca\/profiles\/sims\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. John Simoulidis<\/a> and Ph.D. candidate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kacieghopkins.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kacie Hopkins<\/a> to discuss a gathering of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coopresearch.coop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canadian Association for Studies in Co-operation<\/a> in June 2026, preceeding the CMC Congress.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2640\" height=\"1980\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/CASC-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-248958 size-full\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"896\" height=\"1380\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/Will-Prest-York-Cropped.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-248990 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>The following day, Dan was joined at the York University Campus by William Prest, a member of <a href=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/en\/youth-in-co-operation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canada\u2019s Emerging Co-operators Committee<\/a> and a Financial Controller \/ Compliance Officer at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oshawacu.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Oshawa Community Credit Union<\/a>, also for Congress planning purposes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong><em>YES &#8211; SAVE THE DATE!<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Its official, the 2026 CMC Congress will take place at York University, which is easily accessible by public transportation and close to the Toronto-Pearson International Airport. On June 8, various affinity groups will gather to advance their respective agenda and share best practices, whereas June 9 will be a one-day Congress and awards gala, with June 10 being the CMC AGM in the morning and tours in the afternoon. Home Office in Etobicoke. Attended by industry leaders, government partners and community champions, the event and related tours showcased an amazing space designed to foster collaboration, a sense of community and an investment in the continued growth of a proud Canadian dairy farmer-owned co-operative. Dan is pictured here with Quintin Fox, Director, Learning and Development at Gay Lea (and former Canada Co-operative Association team member), Ed Danen (Gay Lea Board member) and Don Dietrich (Gay Lea and CMC Board member), as well as Jennifer Ross from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.coop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ontario Co-op Association<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For trivia buffs, especially those intending to attend the aforementioned CMC Congress, it is suggested that you make a mental note that Gay Lea stands for \u201cHappy Meadow\u201d&#8230;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-3 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1512\" height=\"958\" data-id=\"248976\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/Gay-Lea-and-OCA-cropped.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-248976\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Lastly, Dan had the privilege of participating and speaking at the <a href=\"https:\/\/canadianworker.coop\/cwcf-conference-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canadian Worker Co-op Federation<\/a> (CWCF) Conference that took place 18-20 November in Edmonton, with the theme Worker Co-ops Build a Better World:&nbsp; Democracy, Diversity and Justice.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1542\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/CWCF-Circle.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-248964 size-full\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"4592\" height=\"3448\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/CWCF-prez-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-248968 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Dan presented an overview of the broader Canadian co-operative movement and answered questions, alongside the CWCF Executive Director Hazel Corcoran, who did a deeper dive on the 350-strong worker co-op segment across the country.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>The Conference also include the CWCF AGM as well as a visit of the famed <a href=\"https:\/\/mchb.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Multicultural Health Brokers Co-operative<\/a> (MCHB). Formally established in 1998, the co-operative now has more than 100 worker-members. A true pioneer in cultural brokering, the members serve 23 cultural\/language communities and help bridge the gap between newcomers and the Canadian society where they now live.
