These visits highlighted the depth, diversity, and momentum of Canada\u2019s co\u2011operatives as we prepare for Congress 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/20260110_144453-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-249179 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>In mid-January, Dan was enjoying a quiet drive when he came across the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fermeagricola.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Agricola Cooperative Farm<\/a>, which is situated on a&nbsp;160-acre&nbsp;property&nbsp;in&nbsp;Papineauville,&nbsp;Quebec,&nbsp;situated&nbsp; 10 minutes North of Montebello and just under an hour from Mont-Tremblant. Established in 2022 through a&nbsp;co-op conversion, the young farmers&nbsp;that&nbsp;established&nbsp;this worker co-op now&nbsp;grow organic vegetables and flowers for the Ottawa and the Outaouais&nbsp;areas and&nbsp;participate&nbsp;actively in various markets. Agricola is also part of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alimentsfarmhousefood.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the&nbsp;Farmhouse Food Cooperative&nbsp;Inc<\/a>,&nbsp;along&nbsp;with&nbsp;15&nbsp;other farms,&nbsp;which&nbsp;delivers&nbsp;fresh local produce directly to the door of those who subscribe to the service.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Dan visited&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cooperativehabitation.coop\/cooperatives\/verendrye-de-la\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">La coop d\u2019habitation de la&nbsp;V\u00e9rendrye<\/a>. Created in 1987, this co-op has two buildings&nbsp;and&nbsp;a total of 24 &#8211; 2-bedroom, cat friendly units.&nbsp;It&nbsp;is&nbsp;part of the F\u00e9d\u00e9ration&nbsp;intercoop\u00e9rative&nbsp;en habitation de l\u2019Outaouais&nbsp;(FIHAB),&nbsp;itself&nbsp;part of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cooperativehabitation.coop\/la-confederation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Conf\u00e9d\u00e9ration Qu\u00e9b\u00e9coise des coop\u00e9ratives d\u2019habitation<\/a>, a CMC&nbsp;member.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/20260123_155902-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-249181 size-full\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/1000048588-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-249183 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Marie-Eve Barrette, who is also a volunteer with the same organization,&nbsp;was&nbsp;the co-founder of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/asdsportstsa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Coop\u00e9rative Multisport TSA Outaouais<\/a>&nbsp;in 2018. This co-operative&nbsp;offers a year-round sports environment suitable for children aged 5 to 16 with autism spectrum&nbsp;disorder and&nbsp;was&nbsp;established&nbsp;by parents who all happened to be teachers. Together, they created an entity that is committed to the social and physical development of young people through dance, basketball,&nbsp;soccer, hockey&nbsp;and soon,&nbsp;tennis. A recent pride point was being the recipient of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/rapho.org\/dossiers\/\">2025&nbsp;David Award<\/a>&nbsp;in the recreation and sports category.&nbsp;Presented by the&nbsp;<em>Regroupement&nbsp;des associations de personnes handicap\u00e9es de l&#8217;Outaouais <\/em>(RAPHO),&nbsp;it is an&nbsp;honorary distinction that celebrates outstanding initiatives in the field of inclusion and social participation.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>The end of the month brought Dan and CMC Executive Director Michael Toye to Guelph and Toronto for work. On the way they stopped at&nbsp;Borelia&nbsp;Co-operative Homes, the sole co-operative in Port Perry Ontario, Micheal&#8217;s hometown. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This co-operative&nbsp;was&nbsp;established&nbsp;in&nbsp;1984 and&nbsp;has&nbsp;seventy&nbsp;units that&nbsp;are either subsidized&nbsp;or&nbsp;market units,&nbsp;in the form of apartments and townhouses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/Borelia-24-jan-2025-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-249187 size-full\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"575\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/Growmark-26-january-1024x575.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-249195 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/Growmark-26-january-980x550.jpg 980w, https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/Growmark-26-january-480x269.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>The\u00a0record-breaking snowfall\u00a0on Sunday, June 25\u00a0impacted\u00a0the plan with two of the meetings\u00a0on the next day,\u00a0converting to virtual ones. The first was with one of CMC\u2019s founding members,\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.growmark.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GROWMARK, Inc.<\/a>\u00a0This Illinois-based international co-operative\u00a0supplies and\u00a0serves\u00a0agricultural co-operatives throughout\u00a0the\u00a0American\u00a0Midwest\u00a0and north-eastern states, as well as in the\u00a0Ontario\u00a0market.\u00a0The\u00a0Ontario headquarters\u00a0currently supplies and serves 50 FS agricultural co-op locations plus FS PARTNERS, a division of GROWMARK,\u00a0has another\u00a0eighteen\u00a0branches throughout central and south-western Ontario. The FS System in Ontario\u00a0represents\u00a0close to 30,000 members, 1,500 employees and close to 90,000 customers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Michael and Dan then met with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperators.ca\/en\/personal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Co-operators<\/a>, another founding member,&nbsp;for strategic discussions and feedback.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Co-operators&nbsp;was&nbsp;established&nbsp;in 1945 and is a leading Canadian financial services provider of insurance, investment products and services for Canadians and businesses. This innovative co-operative&nbsp;was&nbsp;established&nbsp;in 1988 by flower&nbsp;and&nbsp;vegetable greenhouse&nbsp;growers who wanted to pool their purchasing power to buy natural gas.&nbsp;Now serving a larger array&nbsp;of&nbsp;agricultural producers and processors in Ontario, AG Energy offers a variety of&nbsp;natural gas and electricity programs, as well as energy assessments and management services.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Dan met up with CMC\u2019s founding Executive Director,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/denyse-guy-89a17b34\/?originalSubdomain=ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Denyse Guy,<\/a>&nbsp; who lives in a community nearby. Denyse&nbsp;has been a tireless advocate, movement&nbsp;builder&nbsp;and co-op developer&nbsp;for more than 40 years,&nbsp;and as such is&nbsp;a great source&nbsp;of insight.&nbsp;Over the years, she has been involved in&nbsp;leadership positions in representative bodies in&nbsp;financial, local food and renewable energy&nbsp;co-operatives sectors.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/Denyse-Guy-26-jan-2026-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-249185 size-full\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/Jennifer-Ross-OCA-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-249193 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>The day wrapped up with a meeting with Jennifer Ross, Executive of the Ontario Co-operative Association.&nbsp;The OCA is a&nbsp;non-share capital and non-profit co-operative that was originally formed in 1989 as&nbsp;the Canadian Co-operative Association &#8211;&nbsp;Ontario Region. It was&nbsp;officially incorporated in 2002 as the Ontario Co-operative Association (OCA)&nbsp;to&nbsp;represent&nbsp;and&nbsp;serve English-speaking co-operatives and co-op member organizations&nbsp;in the province. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/Media-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-249209 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/Media-4.jpg 600w, https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/Media-4-480x640.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 600px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>January 27 brought Mike and Dan to the Annual General meeting of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gaylea.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gay Lea Foods Co-operative Ltd<\/a>, which was the&nbsp;original catalyst for the travel to the Greater Toronto Area. 2025 was a record year with 850 millions liters of milk processed and $ 1.377 Billion in sales, with members on&nbsp;1,300&nbsp;cow and goat milk&nbsp;dairy farms across Ontario and Manitoba.&nbsp;As a founding member of CMC, Gay Lea Foods Co-operative has played a leadership role in the movement for&nbsp;many&nbsp;years, and we look forward to helping attendees discover more about it as the anchor institution for the second co-op tour available on June 10.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>A stop at York University validated questions and&nbsp;requirements for Congress 2026.&nbsp;Which will be&nbsp;<strong>three days of connection, collaboration, and co-op innovation<\/strong>&nbsp;from June 8 to 10. The first day will be a series of&nbsp;gatherings hosted by partners&nbsp;that will culminate with&nbsp;an evening reception to spark connections.&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong>June 9&nbsp;will be the main&nbsp;Congress Day, where&nbsp;co-op leaders<\/strong>\u202fwill have the opportunity to be learn through plenaries,&nbsp;workshops&nbsp;and other sessions&nbsp;through&nbsp;four different streams,&nbsp;under the&nbsp;<em>Power the Economy&nbsp;<\/em>mindset, before the day wraps up with the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/en\/cmcs-awards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Awards Gala<\/strong><\/a>. For&nbsp;the latter, the nomination period is still open until 10 February.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/Media-3-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-249207 size-full\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"638\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/shared-image-1024x638.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-249205 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/shared-image-980x610.jpg 980w, https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/shared-image-480x299.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>The final meeting was held with Dr. John Simoulidis, President of the <a href=\"https:\/\/usaskstudies.us9.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=58dba976e8c75f5e3350bf504&amp;id=4eb3ea9211&amp;e=2a4804426f\">Canadian Association for Studies in Co-operation (CASC)<\/a> and a member of CMC. The CASC conference will take place on June 7\u20138 at York University, offering a key opportunity for collaboration between researchers and practitioners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Academics are invited to <a href=\"https:\/\/usaskstudies.us9.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=58dba976e8c75f5e3350bf504&amp;id=2bf9c80947&amp;e=2a4804426f\">submit abstracts<\/a> for the conference by February 20, and a short overview of their research projects by March 31 for enhanced visibility at the CMC Congress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CASC and CMC also encourage applications for the <a href=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/en\/casc-scholarships\/\">CASC Scholarships<\/a> (deadline: March 31, 2026) as well as the <a href=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/en\/ian-macpherson-legacy-fund\/\">Ian MacPherson Legacy Fund<\/a>, which accepts applications on an ongoing basis.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Michael&#8217;s recent travels to Guelph and the Greater Toronto Area earned him a rare distinction, awarded to only six people. He fulfilled all three criteria: driving over 1,000 km, staying one night in an affordable hotel, and participating in several cooperative meetings.
