Dan was there to spotlight the economic potential of co-operatives and connect with key sector allies, including Pascal Harvey, President and CEO of the R\u00e9seau des <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sadc-cae.ca\/en\/\">SADC et CAE<\/a>, pictured here. The network represents 67 of the 267 offices in the <a href=\"https:\/\/communityfuturescanada.ca\/\">Community Futures of Canada Network<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" data-id=\"249492\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mike-and-Stephane-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-249492\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" data-id=\"249506\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/Socodevi-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-249506\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Later that month, Dan attended the <a href=\"https:\/\/sollio.coop\/en\/about-us\">Sollio Co-operative Group<\/a>\u2019s annual general meeting, where he captured a photo of CMC Executive Director Mike Toye with <a href=\"https:\/\/sollio.coop\/en\/about-us\/management\/stephane-forget\">St\u00e9phane Forget<\/a>, Senior Vice-President, Public Affairs, Co-operation and Corporate Responsibility at Sollio, and a member of CMC\u2019s Board of Directors. Sollio reported revenues of $8.29 billion for the year, reaffirming its position as Canada\u2019s largest agri-food co-operative. During the event, Dan also visited the booth of <a href=\"https:\/\/socodevi.org\/en\/\">SOCODEVI<\/a>, a Quebec-based international co-operation organization founded in 1985 and long supported by Sollio. He was pleased to see a photo of himself and Claire Gosselin-Gagnon of the <a href=\"https:\/\/cqcm.coop\/\">Conseil qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois de la coop\u00e9ration et de la mutualit\u00e9 (CQCM)<\/a> featured in SOCODEVI\u2019s annual report, taken during a mission to Ghana with cocoa farmers as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/socodevi.org\/en\/project\/together\/\">TogetHER project<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>In March, Dan travelled to Alberta to deepen CMC\u2019s understanding of the province\u2019s co-operative and economic development ecosystem. His visit included a <a href=\"https:\/\/ufa.com\/\">United Farmers of Alberta<\/a>\u2013focused tour that began with a site visit to the Goldeye Centre (a name to remember for those attending Congress\u00a0and doing the quiz) in Nordegg, the longtime home of the <a href=\"https:\/\/goldeyeresort.com\/co-operative-youth-leadership-camps\/\">Co-operative Youth Leadership Camps<\/a>, now operated by UFA\u2019s charitable arm. The Centre is set to host the camps again in 2026 following a brief hiatus, while also expanding its role to include leadership retreats and, over time, serving as a hub for regional tourism. A tour led by the Centre\u2019s new General Manager, Dylan Meisner, highlighted the scope of the revitalization underway. Dan looks forward to returning once the rejuvenation plan is complete and the Centre\u2019s core mission\u2014supporting youth leadership through co-operative education\u2014continues to build on its strong legacy.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"803\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/Goldeye-and-Dylan-803x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-249484 size-full\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/Kevin-Hoppins-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-249490 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>At the UFA AGM banquet, held following confirmation of the most successful year in the co-operative\u2019s history, Dan connected with members and sector leaders from across the organization. UFA reported revenues of $2.2\u202fbillion and a membership of more than 120,000 co-op members. Among those Dan met was Kevin Hoppins\u2014former Chair, current Director, and grandson of one of the founders of the Goldeye Centre. Today, UFA operates 34 Farm &amp; Ranch Supply stores, 121 petroleum agency and cardlock locations, six fertilizer blending facilities, and maintains a presence in five provinces.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:51px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" data-id=\"249474\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/Bettcher-2-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-249474\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" data-id=\"249476\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/Bettcher-3-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-249476\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" data-id=\"249510\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/1000051543-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-249510\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Dan also had the opportunity to fulfil a long-standing promise with a visit to the Bettcher Family Farm in Taber, Alberta. The farm is owned and operated by Jim Bettcher\u2014a former long-serving CMC director\u2014alongside his wife and son, with enthusiastic support from the next generation. The award-winning operation produces sugar beets, forages, cereals, and grasslands, and raises purebred Gelbvieh and commercial Angus cattle. For Dan, who comes from a non-farming background, experiencing calving season firsthand and touring the farm with an owner deeply proud of his family and operation made for a particularly memorable visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>While in Alberta, Dan also visited several co-operative enterprises, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seed.ab.ca\/plants\/MountainView\/\">Mountain View Seed Cleaning Plant Ltd<\/a>. Established in 1957, the co-operative has 590 members and is one of 67 farmer-owned seed and grain processing co-operatives operating across Alberta and the Peace region of British Columbia. These co-operatives are members of Alberta Seed Processors and were part of the successful renewal of the <a href=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/en\/government-relations\/\">tax-deferred co-operative share program for agricultural co-operatives<\/a>, led by CMC.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mountain-View-Carstairs-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-249494 size-full\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/Rockview-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-249498 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/Rockview-980x735.jpg 980w, https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/Rockview-480x360.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>During his travels, Dan also noted the strong presence of Federated Co-operatives Limited\u2019s CO\u2011OP\u00ae brand across food, agriculture, fuel, and home-related outlets, as well as on the vehicles servicing the 1,600 locations within the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.co-op.crs\/about\">Co-operative Retailing System<\/a>. (FedGas), a CMC member organization. With no natural gas co-operatives operating in the Gatineau\u2013Ottawa region, Dan found it particularly informative to learn how the Alberta government supported the creation of gas co-ops more than 60 years ago to extend natural gas service to rural communities. Rocky Gas Co-op is now preparing to expand its service area to Nordegg. The co-op also operates alongside a neighbouring co-operative, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluemountainpower.coop\/\">Blue Mountain Power Co-op<\/a>, a frontline member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/afrea.ab.ca\/\">Alberta Federation of Rural Electrification Associations<\/a> (AFREA), another CMC member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/Jodi-and-Finton-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-249488 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>While in Calgary, Dan met with fellow <a href=\"https:\/\/cdfcanada.coop\/\">Co-operative Development Foundation of Canada<\/a> board member Jodi Chambers of Conexus Credit Union, who also serves as a Director with the <a href=\"https:\/\/ccua.com\/about-ccua\/board-of-directors\/\">Canadian Credit Union Association<\/a>. They were joined by Finton Ryan, a former Irish\u2014and later Canadian\u2014credit union CEO who now works as an executive coach. The two first met years ago in Ghana while working on a Canadian Co-operative Association (now CMC) project that brought Canadian and Irish credit union expertise to the country. Their discussion offered valuable first-hand insights into co-operative culture, sector dynamics, and consolidation within the credit union system. As of January 1, 2026, Conexus Credit Union is the result of the amalgamation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conexus.ca\/about-us\/meet-conexus\">Conexus Credit Union (2006)<\/a>, Cornerstone Credit Union Financial Group Limited, and Synergy Credit Union Ltd. The organization\u2019s roots date back to 1937, when its first location was established as the Regina Co-operative Savings and Credit Union.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Speaking of credit unions, a Servus Credit Union branch located just down the street from the brunch venue provided another photo opportunity. In 2025, Edmonton-based <a href=\"https:\/\/servus.ca\/about\/our-story\/our-organization\">Servus Credit Union Ltd<\/a>. became Canada\u2019s largest credit union, with $30\u202fbillion in assets (excluding the Desjardins Group, which is composed of caisses), following its successful merger with connectFirst Credit Union in 2024. Today, Servus operates 147 branches across 80 communities.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/Servus-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-249504 size-full\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/Nancy-and-Calgary-Farmers-Market-NGC-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-249496 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>While in Calgary, Dan also connected with colleague Nancy Wanye, CMC\u2019s Manager of Government Relations, who suggested meeting at the <a href=\"https:\/\/calgaryfarmersmarket.ca\/cfm-west\/\">Calgary Farmers\u2019 Market West<\/a>\u2014a striking, modern facility operated as a New Generation Co-operative. As described by <a href=\"https:\/\/cooperativesfirst.com\/blog\/2017\/03\/27\/2017322new-generation-cooperatives\/\">Kyle White of Co-operatives First<\/a>, New Generation Co-operatives enable farmers and ranchers to invest in downstream, value-added enterprises that purchase their commodities at fair market value, keep investment dollars within the community, and enhance returns\u2014potentially generating dividends in addition to guaranteed purchases.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Thanks to modern technology, Dan was also able to present an overview of the Canadian co\u2011operative ecosystem to the Board of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.econo.coop\/en\">EconoCoop<\/a>, supporting their Principle 5 efforts related to education, training, and information for strong co\u2011operative leadership. Founded in 2020, EconoCoop was created to support francophone early learning and childcare services in minority\u2011language settings through the co\u2011operative model. In just a few years, it has grown to serve more than 750 service points nationwide by offering group purchasing, back\u2011office services, and other shared supports to a wide range of childcare providers. EconoCoop became <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperators.ca\/en\/about-us\/newsroom\/2025-04-28\">a member of Co\u2011operators<\/a> in 2025 and is actively collaborating with both Co\u2011operators and Desjardins Financial Group on promising Principle 6 initiatives. Its engagement in the broader co\u2011operative movement is further reflected by the involvement of CMC Board member Tyler Paturel and Fatim Kouyat\u00e9, a member of <a href=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/en\/youth-in-co-operation\/\">Canada\u2019s Emerging Co\u2011operators<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"472\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/EconoCoop-Photo-18-mars-1024x472.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-249482 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/EconoCoop-Photo-18-mars-980x451.jpg 980w, https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/EconoCoop-Photo-18-mars-480x221.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/Hazel-CWCF-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-249486 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Dan\u2019s final meeting was with Hazel Corcoran, the soon-to-be-retired Executive Director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/canadianworker.coop\/\">Canadian Worker Co\u2011operative Federation<\/a>, who shared reflections from her 35\u2011year career in the co\u2011operative movement and her leadership in building strong, connected networks across the sector. Dan also noted that Hazel\u2019s position is <a href=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/en\/job\/canadian-worker-co-operative-federation-canada-54-executive-director\/\">currently posted<\/a> and expressed his hope that CWCF will continue to benefit from strong leadership, given its important role in supporting the broader co\u2011operative movement in Canada.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-4 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" data-id=\"249478\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/Calgary-Co-op-Strahmore-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-249478\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" data-id=\"249508\" src=\"https:\/\/canada.coop\/wp-content\/uploads\/UFA-Cardlock-Strathmore-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-249508\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On his way back to the airport, Dan made a brief stop in Strathmore, taking the opportunity to visit the local <a href=\"https:\/\/www.calgarycoop.com\/\">Calgary Co\u2011op grocery store<\/a>.
