For more than a decade, Co-operatives and Mutuals Canada (CMC) has served as the national voice for Canada’s co-operatives, credit unions, caisses, and mutuals. On October 11, 2026, we will begin a new chapter as Canada Co-op, adopting a name and visual identity that are clearer, more memorable, and more closely aligned with the organizations we represent.
While our name and logo are changing, our mission remains the same. We will continue to unite, promote, and advocate for Canada’s co-operatives, credit unions, caisses, and mutuals while supporting the growth and success of our members. As Canada Co-op, we believe we can strengthen our visibility, amplify awareness of the co-operative business model, and make it easier for Canadians, policymakers, partners, and potential members to understand who we are and why our work matters.
Why We Are Changing Our Name
Our current name has served us well, but it does not immediately communicate either who we represent or the scale of the sector we serve. Our new landmark Power the Economy Report 2026: Canada’s Co-operative Advantage (available starting on October 11) demonstrates that Canada’s co-operatives, credit unions, caisses, and mutuals contribute $61.1 billion to GDP, support 745,946 jobs, generate $12.3 billion in tax revenues, and serve more than 14 million Canadians. These are not niche organizations. They are a significant force in Canada’s economy.
The name Canada Co-op more accurately reflects that reality. As the national business association for Canada’s co-operative sector, we want our identity to convey both the strength of the co-operative model and the scale of its economic contribution. The new name is clearer, more accessible, and more recognizable, but it is also more ambitious. It reflects a sector that is growing, increasingly influential, and making a substantial contribution to Canada’s economic and social well-being.
The new name:
- Clearly identifies us as Canada’s national business association for co-operatives.
- Better reflects the scale, influence, and economic impact of the sector we represent.
- Aligns our name, website, and visual identity into one clear and intuitive brand system.
- Improves digital discoverability and makes it easier for people to find and recognize us online.
- Creates a simpler, more memorable, and more recognizable identity than the CMC acronym.
- Strengthens our ability to engage policymakers, media, partners, and the public.
- Helps elevate awareness of the co-operative business model as a powerful part of Canada’s economy.
At the same time, the transition honours CMC’s history and achievements. The work, relationships, and accomplishments built under the CMC name remain an important part of our story and provide the foundation for the future.
Why a New Logo?
Alongside our new name, we are introducing a new logo that reflects a modern, confident, and forward-looking organization.
The new visual identity has been designed to better represent a dynamic and growing sector while creating a stronger, more consistent presence across our communications, government relations initiatives, events, publications, and digital platforms. It reinforces the values of collaboration, community, and collective impact that have always been at the heart of the co-operative model.
Why Now?
The transition to Canada Co-op comes at a particularly significant moment for the sector.
On October 11, CMC will be releasing its Power the Economy Report 2026, a landmark national report that brings together data and research from multiple major sources to provide the most comprehensive picture to date of Canada’s co-operative economy. The report reinforces what many within the sector have long known: co-operatives, credit unions, caisses, and mutuals are helping address issues Canadians care about most, including affordability, housing, local ownership, community resilience, and economic stability.
That reality is also reflected in our new legal name, Canada Co-operative Business Association. It reinforces the fact that co-operatives, credit unions, caisses, and mutuals are businesses that create jobs, generate economic activity, build local wealth, and help power Canada’s economy.
As awareness of the sector’s contributions continues to grow, we believe our national organization should have a name and identity that is equally clear, recognizable, and impactful. The transition to Canada Co-op positions us to better champion the sector’s interests, strengthen its visibility, and tell a clearer national story about the role co-operatives play in building a stronger Canada.
What to Expect
Beginning October 11, you will see the Canada Co-op name and logo reflected across our website, communications, publications, events, and social media channels. We will also release Power the Economy: Canada’s Co-operative Advantage and its companion video,
During the transition period between now and October 11:
- Existing website links will continue to function as users are redirected to our new website.
- Email addresses and digital assets will be updated gradually.
- Some materials may temporarily feature both the CMC and Canada Co-op names as the transition is completed.
Looking Ahead
The transition to Canada Co-op is more than a name change. It is an opportunity to present a stronger, clearer identity for the organizations and communities we serve and to raise awareness of the vital role co-operatives, credit unions, caisses, and mutuals play in Canada’s economy.
We are proud of everything we accomplished as Co-operatives and Mutuals Canada, and we are excited to move forward together as Canada Co-op. Under a name that immediately reflects who we represent, we will continue working to strengthen the sector’s voice, expand its visibility, and support the success of co-operatives and mutuals across the country.
